ChadLou’s Coffee & Tea was created in 2010 in Kailua, Hawaii by the Rosete family. We love great coffee and this beautiful place we call home. Our ʻohana has been in Kailua since the mid ’60s. We are rooted here and our vision is to craft specialty coffee in Kailua and make this community where we live and work a better place.
Meet Our Ohana
Meet Sheila Lou Rosete. Maybe you already have. You may often spot her fluttering in and about ChadLou’s Coffee. ChadLou’s is Sheila’s brainchild. Her husband, partner in crime, extreme coffee feign, and analytics wizard, Matt says about the start of ChadLou’s, “It was like she woke up one morning, and plainly said ‘Let’s open a coffee shop here in Kailua!’ Then she just did it! I thought this is crazy. But Sheila’s just like that about everything. She sees the limitless possibilities for everything and everybody.” He adds, “I’m not gonna lie. I was in shock for quite some time, I think we all were. Business is always very challenging.” And with a more earnest gaze Matt says, “Honestly, even with all the uncertainties, failures, ups and downs and twists… I’ve never been more alive in any other job or time of my life.” Talking with Sheila about the start of ChadLou’s Coffee, one can’t help catch her bubbly energy and thoughtful enthusiasm. She says, “You know, ChadLou’s has become better and greater than I could ever think of. It’s a lot of work and I’ve made every mistake in the book! And then some! ChadLou’s is absolutely where it is now, because of so many people and their unending support, work and dedication. Truly, truly it’s always about the people, it’s about the relationships! Our growth and success is because of our team, the heart and muscle of ChadLou’s, and our loyal customers. Take the combination of our amazing people with our coffee; now that’s a potent potion!” With a bit of rueful reflection she adds, “Not a lot of people know I wanted to give up in the beginning. It was that hard! At the start of ChadLou’s we had every imaginable odd against us, and to stack it off, we experienced a lot of personal trauma. So on top of so much blood, sweat and tears from the build-out and start-up, we lost Matt’s beloved stepmom Christina to cancer. I like to say she won her battle. She fought for over 26 years! Now talk about odds! That happened less than three weeks after we opened our doors. Then, not even two months later, we almost lost my dad to a life threatening pnemonia.” chadlouscoffee”There was a lot of shock and PTSD from all that going on for a very very long time. I wanted to call it quits so badly. I know so well from those circumstances how it feels to be so overwhelmed you can’t breath. Thankfully, I didn’t give up. Matt caught the vision of ChadLou’s Coffee while I was helping care for Dad in San Diego. I was there for 3 months! I left everything! It was crazy! I left Matt, the shop and even brought our then 3 year old Josiah and 9 month old Anna with me so that I can help take care of Dad. The tears now seem as fresh as they were five years ago. So with the encouragement of Matt, our parents, and dearest friends, I didn’t call it quits. Together, Matt and I pushed on and persevered. What’s crazy is that the start of it all, still feels as fresh as yesterday.” “More often then not, it really seems like the good stuff, the worthy stuff in life is the hard stuff. That’s says a lot. So that’s part of our story, one of the many grains to a whole bigger picture. It’s just the beginning, and it’s only getting better and better. All this is the very substance that I especially love about ChadLou’s Coffee. This industry we’re apart of has grown exponentially! Why? Because I believe coffee has created this global community that has fueled and tapped into the ingenuity of so many people on all kinds of levels! I’m stoked and humbled to be apart of such a pulsing enterprise. And I get more excited to share it with others. As we seek to bring amazing coffee here to our little corner of the world, ChadLou’s Coffee is a beautiful strong collective of people, their stories and their creations. I crave being apart of that everyday.”
